The average American gains 9 lbs over the holidays… SCARY:)
Which would help to explain why weight loss/fitness is the #1 New Years resolution.
What’s sad is that 85% of Americans who start their post New Years workout routine drop it by the middle of February.
The struggle is obviously real!
I have spent decades analyzing this annual trend and have come up with many reasons why people fail.
And while it varies from person to person one of the most common is accountability. You are all fired up to start working out so you join the gym and are going regularly until life starts getting in the way and their is no one around to keep you committed to your program. The wheels fall off and before you know it you are right back to where you began or worse.
Another common reason is you go from out of shape, doing nothing, to hitting the gym 90 minutes a day 5 days a week. Your body eventually rebels and over rides any will power you thought you had.
Those are not the only pitfalls that happen this time of year but they are the two most common. So whether you have fallen victim to one of the two previously mentioned or a different one the real question is how can you succeed this time.
The best way is to figure out how to create a level of accountability. That could be a friend who is willing to commit with you, a personal trainer, a group class or even your spouse/partner.
I used to do a lot of public speaking on the topic. I would always go over the myriad of excuses, “reasons”, that a person might have to not workout asking the audience who could relate to the different reasons. After going through them I would then pose the question to those who raised their hands as follows; what if I offered you $100 for every hour you worked out? Do you think you could find 3 – 4 hours per week to exercise and naturally 95%+ of them raised their hands that they could. My point being, most “reasons” are just excuses to avoid working out. If there was enough incentive you could find a way.
So my encouragement as we steam towards 2017 is to figure out how to be successful this year.
